Addressing Inequalities and
Challenges to Social Inclusion
Commission on Social Development
On February 14, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, gave a statement during the 57th Session of the Commission for Social Development on Item 3(a), dedicated to “Addressing inequalities and challenges to social inclusion through fiscal, wage and social protection policies.” The statement was delivered by Msgr. Tomasz Grysa, First Counselor and Deputy Permanent Observer of the Holy See Mission.
In his remarks, Archbishop Auza said that global inequality levels remain very high and that greater income inequality diminishes intergenerational economic mobility, the impact of economic growth on poverty reduction, and social cohesion. Inclusive quality education, particularly for children in disadvantaged socio-economic situations, is a fundamental means to bridge inequalities, he said. He also underlined that the most effective social protection policy of all is strengthening the family through child and family support, family-friendly fiscal policies and social protection programs. Ensuring equal pay for equal work among women and men, fairness in career advancement and protection for mothers are also key.
