On March 10, 2010 the Holy See Mission sponsored a Panel discussion at UN Headquarters, entitled: Globalization: It makes us neighbors, grasps equality between women and men. Can it also establish fraternity? - In light of the Encyclical Caritas in Veritate. Click here for more information.

On April 16, 2009 the Holy See Mission held a symposium at UN Headquarters to commemorate the first anniversary of the visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the United Nations. The event drew a number of Permanent Representatives as well as many UN officials and members of the public, showing that the Pope's message remains fresh in the minds of people who heard him last year. POPE BENEDICT'S VISIT TO THE UNITED NATIONS

On April 18, 2008, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where he met with Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon and the President of the General Assembly, Mr. Srgjan Kerim. The Holy Father addressed the General Assembly and the Staff of the United Nations.

Exactly one year prior to the Holy Father's visit to the United Nations, on April 18, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI had received UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon who had invited him to the Organization's Headquarters in New York. Click here to view pictures of the visit.

In the context of the 40th anniversary of the Holy See’s Permanent Observer Mission to the UN, on 1 July 2004, the General Assembly adopted a Resolution, by acclamation, confirming and strengthening the rights of the Holy See as a Permanent Observer in the UN. The Holy See now enjoys, among other things, the right to participate in the general debate of the General Assembly; the right of reply; the right to have its communications issued and circulated directly as official documents of the Assembly; and the right to co-sponsor draft resolutions and decisions that make reference to the Holy See.
