FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOLY SEE SIDE EVENT

The Human Dignity of Women in Contemporary Society:

Caregiving within the Family

On Wednesday, March 11, 2009 from 1:15 to 2:45 pm, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See Mission, and its co-sponsors, the Path to Peace Foundation and the Vincentian Center for Church and Society, St. John’s University, will host a side event on the occasion of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women meeting entitled: The Human Dignity of Women in Contemporary Society: Caregiving within the Family at the United Nations, Conference Room 2.

The panelists include Sr. Marie-Bernard Alima Mbala, S.J.A.E., Secretary General, Congolese Bishops Justice and Peace Commission, Marilyn Martone, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Theology and Religious Studies, St. John’s University, and Linda Sama, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Global Initiatives and Professor Management, Tobin College of Business, St. John’s University.

The panel will be moderated by Mary Ann Dantuono, J.D., Associate Director of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society at St. John’s University.

By drawing upon their rich and varied knowledge and experiences the panelists will focus on the equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men in light of the priority theme of the 53rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women.  Elements they will explore include accelerating implementation of previous commitments at national level, increasing attention to information and data needs, and enhancing capacity to mainstream the theme.  Affirming the equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes, the panelists also hope to draw attention to gender perspectives of the financial crisis.

[If you will need a pass to enter the United Nations, you must RSVP by March 1, 2009, preferably by e-mailing office@holyseemission.org or by calling (212) 370-7885. Enter the United Nations at 46th Street Visitors’ Entrance.  Photo ID also required for admission.]
