On October 15, The Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the UN gave an intervention before the Second Committee of the 70th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations on Agenda item 22 concerning “Globalization and Interdependence.”
In its statement, the Holy See said that globalization brings with it lights and shadows depending on whether the underlying ethic and policies driving it flows from indifference and exclusion or from solidarity, inclusion and cooperation. The globalization of solidarity is not only an “ethical imperative,” the Holy See stated, but “also makes economic and political sense.”
The Holy See called particular attention to developing countries that face enormous challenges to participate in the global economy as well as to the problem of unemployment and labor migration. It said that the “human face of migration” must never be forgotten. It also emphasized the United Nations should strengthen its role as a global forum where the poorest and marginalized can be heard.
