CSocD Agenda Item 3 (a): Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all

On February 6, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the UN gave an intervention during the 55th Session of the Commission for Social Development on Agenda Item 3 (a), dedicated to “Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all.”

In its statement, the Holy See said that poverty eradication is the greatest global challenge and cannot be reduced to economics. Poverty, rather, must be addressed in its personal, social and environmental dimensions as well. Economic development must be combined with civil progress to result in peace. In too many places, this civil progress is lacking, as we see in the global insecurities driving or flowing from the migration crisis. Poverty eradication requires providing the young with education, jobs and personal growth opportunities. It must include the social wealth contributions of our elderly. And it must incorporate the contributions of people on the move.
