Statement after Adoption: Strengthening of the Coordination of Emergency Humanitarian Assistance of the UN

On June 21, The Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations gave a statement at the Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the Economic and Social Council after the adoption of the resolution on “Strengthening of the Coordination of Emergency Humanitarian Assistance of the United Nations.”

In its statement, the Holy See said that it always raises its voice in defense of the dignity and human rights of those ensnared in humanitarian emergencies. It praised improvements in the text on providing quality education for children during humanitarian situations, on child protection, on Internally Displaced Persons, on the positive role of elderly and youth, and on the barriers faced by those with disabilities. The Holy See made reservations on the terms “sexual and reproductive health,” "sexual and reproductive health care services,” and “gender,” stating that abortion and abortifacients are not health care and gender must be grounded in biological sexual identity and difference.
