On December 4, the Holy See gave an intervention during the High-level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Development Cooperation with Middle-Income Countries, held at U.N. Headquarters in New York.  

In its remarks, the Holy See praised the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for emphasizing that the eradication of poverty and the promotion of authentic human development involves a reciprocal approach among social, environmental and economic progress, rather than a focus on economic development alone. Human rights, education, healthcare, protection of our common home, and work are all key, it said. It called for an economy of inclusion, which allows people in middle income countries to become agents of their own development involved in key decision making about policies that impact them. But for this to happen, the global economy cannot be dominated by unregulated markets and an ethics of profit at all costs; rather it must link human dignity and the common good, tying freedom to responsibility and social and economic rights to a reciprocal obligation between the individual and the community.
