Archbishop Caccia Delivers Statement at the 63rd Session of the Commission for Social Development

On 12 February 2025, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, issued a statement at the 63rd Session of the Commission for Social Development on the theme: “Strengthening solidarity, social inclusion and social cohesion to accelerate the delivery of the commitments of the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development as well as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

In his remarks, Archbishop Caccia noted that solidarity is an active commitment to the common good, rooted in the intrinsic social nature of the human person and the equal God-given dignity of all. He further observed that solidarity is only realized to the extent that it encompasses all members of the human family.

Expressing concern that those in vulnerable situations are sometimes deliberately excluded in a "throwaway culture" that sees some people as disposable, the Archbishop called for action to promote the integral development and flourishing of all human beings.

The Archbishop highlighted the need for social cohesion amid growing fragmentation, noting the importance of the principle of subsidiarity, which recognizes and values the role of each level of society. Finally, he emphasized the importance of the family as the foundational unit of society and “school of deeper humanity.”

Archbishop Caccia Delivers Statement at the General Assembly Eleventh Emergency Session

On 24 February 2025, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, issued a statement during the reconvened Eleventh Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly.

On the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Archbishop Caccia expressed deep concern at the protraction of the conflict, which is causing a great loss of life and hardship for the entire Ukrainian population.

The consequences of this war stretch far beyond the borders of Ukraine, the Archbishop noted, impacting the global economy, causing environmental damage and wreaking devastation on the humanitarian level. He highlighted, in particular, the suffering of the most vulnerable, not only from physical harm but also from the erosion of their basic rights and access to essential services.

The Archbishop concluded echoing Pope Francis’s message that war is always a failure, and insisting that we cannot in any way accept the bombing of civilians or the attacking of infrastructures necessary for their survival. He called for the entire international community to work to end the conflict.

Fall 2025 Internship
Applications are Open

Since 2015, the Holy See Mission has had 212 interns from 40 countries. The internship program provides the opportunity for bright, Catholic, English-speaking college graduates or graduate students to gain experience assisting the Holy See in its multilateral work at the UN, seeking to bring the light of Catholic Social Teaching to the debates of the international community.

Our interns are integral to the work of the Holy See at the United Nations. They attend various UN meetings, conferences, and debates, and then prepare reports that, once reviewed, are sent to the Holy See’s central offices in the Vatican. Our interns also assist with the Mission’s conferences, receptions, and cultural events.

There are three internship cycles each year: Fall, Spring, and Summer, and eight internship positions are available per cycle. The Mission is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2025 session, which will run from September through December 2025.
