Meetings on Global Compact for Safe,
Orderly and Regular Migration

In anticipation of the negotiations beginning next week on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, Archbishop Auza held two sessions this week to solicit input: the first from migration-related, Catholic-inspired non governmental organizations and the second for the experts of the Mission. The sessions were facilitated by Timothy Herrmann, the Mission's lead for the Compact. Participants shared their expertise on the strengths of the zero (first) draft for the Global Compact as well as those areas in which the text needs to be improved. This week is the first of six negotiation sessions on the Compact to take place one week per month for the next six months.

On February 12, Archbishop Auza welcomed members Catholic-inspired NGOs that focus on migration. Participants were able to deepen their understanding of the Holy See's role in the negotiation process as well as share their experience as experts on migration.

Timothy Herrmann, Holy See Mission attaché entrusted with the negotiations for the Global Compact on Migration, takes note of comments made by participants, including Jane Bloom, Head of the US Liaison Office of the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), pictured here.

On February 13, Archbishop Auza welcomed experts of the Holy See Mission so that they are each well-informed on the Global Compact for Migration and the Church's understanding of issues related to migration. They also had the opportunity to share the ways migration and the Global Compact relate to their various areas of expertise, such as human rights law and development.

In his presentation on the Global Compact for Migration to Holy See Mission experts, Timothy Herrmann shared the 20 Action Points that the Vatican’s Section on Migrants and Refugees prepared, which sprung from the voices and expertise of bishops and NGOs who care for migrants and refugees on the ground so that their practical experience with the most vulnerable might serve as a guide in the negotiation process for legal frameworks.
