Peace and Security in Africa

On May 19, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, submitted a statement to the Security Council Open Debate on Peace and Security in Africa, being held virtually.

Archbishop Caccia began his remarks by noting the noble aims of the Silencing the Guns initiative. He regretted that it had not yet been achieved but urged relevant parties to persevere toward this end. He shared Pope Francis' reflection that "today's scandal" is the fact that while the social and economic crisis stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic remains severe, armed conflict continues to rage.

Archbishop Caccia welcomed the humanitarian assistance delivered to the region and called for a prioritization of quality education for African children. Poor or no education, he said, "increases the risk of extreme poverty and manipulation by or enrollment into militias." He also mentioned the Catholic Church's efforts in the provision of education, health care, and peace building in the region.
