In accordance with the rules governing the General Assembly no Member or Observer State is entitled to oppose the tabling of a draft resolution by a Member State. In light of this, the Holy See does not object to the tabling of a draft resolution concerning the raising of the flags of Observer States at the UN headquarters and offices.

The Holy See, however, notes the long established praxis and tradition of the UN, since 1945, whereby only flags of member States are displayed at the UN headquarters and offices, and  will accept whatever decision that the UN may wish to take in this regard in the future.

COMUNICATO STAMPA A RIGUARDO DELLE BANDIERE DEGLI STATI OSSERVATORI ALL’ONU

In accordo con le regole dell’Assemblea Generale, nessuno Stato membro o Osservatore ha il diritto di opporsi alla presentazione di una bozza di risoluzione da parte di uno Stato membro. Alla luce di ciò, la Santa Sede non fa obiezioni alla presentazione di una bozza di risoluzione concernente l’innalzamento delle bandiere degli Stati Osservatori nella sede e negli uffici delle Nazioni Unite.

La Santa Sede, tuttavia, prende nota della prassi da tempo stabilita e della tradizione dell’ONU, sin dal 1945, secondo la quale soltanto le bandiere degli Stati membri sono dispiegate nella sede e negli uffici dell’ONU, e accetterà qualsiasi decisione che l’ONU vorrà prendere al riguardo nel futuro.
