Security Council: Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction

On June 28, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN, gave an intervention during the Security Council Open Debate on the “Non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction.”

In his statement, Archbishop Auza said the proliferation of weapons, both conventional and of mass destruction, aggravates situations of conflict and causes suffering for many innocent people. He echoed Pope Francis’ appeal to end the arms trade, which would lead to the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and reduce the world’s reliance on armed force in international affairs, calling for States to cooperate and find political solutions to prevent and end conflict.
